Undergraduates studying for a B.A. honours degree in Oriental Studies may choose to focus entirely on Persian, or may combine Persian with an additional language, or combine Persian and Islamic Studies, or Persian with Islamic Art and Archaeology. In addition to these courses, Persian may also be studied as an additional language as part of other degrees within the Faculty and wider University.

The NME Department at SOAS is a unique concentration of teaching and research on 5000 years of culture, from cuneiform and ziggurats to Arabic and Islamic revolution. It is Britain's largest university department specialising in the languages and cultures of the Middle East, with a long and distinguished track record in teaching and research in the region's modern and ancient languages.
More than twenty-five members of the department's staff are engaged full-time in research into Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Arabic and Islamic Studies, Caucasian languages, Hebrew and Israeli Studies, Persian and Iranian, and Turkish. On the teaching side, the department runs seven postgraduate and fourteen undergraduate degree programmes.

The Centre for Persian and Iranian Studies (CPIS) was set up in 2008 to coordinate and enhance the activities of Exeter University scholars in the broad range of Persian and Iranian studies (whether History, Literature, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Politics, Classics, or in other fields). The Centre is based in the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, within the College of Social Sciences and International Studies.
