Sheila R. Canby ( 1949-2025)

It is with deep regret and great sadness that the BIPS Council has learnt of the passing of Dr Sheila Canby who for many years was a member of the BIPS Council.

Latterly she was the Keeper of the Department of Islamic Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and before that Curator of the Islamic Collections at the British Museum.

Colleagues in the UK will remember her exhibition Shah ‘Abbas: The Remaking of Iran in 2009. She was the author of many outstanding books on Persian art, especially on the Safavid period.
