The ‘Iran and Sovereignty’ project at the British Academy Summer Showcase 2023

On 15 June 2023, Dr Shabnam Holliday (University of Plymouth/BIPS) presented her ‘Iran and Sovereignty’ project at the British Academy Summer Showcase 2023.

‘Iran and Sovereignty’ is a collaborative interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary project that brings together scholars from the UK, the EU, and the USA in the fields of archaeology, cultural studies, ancient, medieval and modern history, politics, and international relations. It explores the complexity of sovereignty in Iran and highlights the importance of ‘Area Studies’ to address Eurocentrism in the humanities and social sciences. The project has been funded by the British Institute of Persian Studies as part of the Modern Research Project ‘Iran and the International’, and is associated with the University of Plymouth.

The Summer Showcase is a British Academy annual event during which the thinkers shaping our world with their pioneering social sciences and humanities research present their work through a rich programme of engaging workshops, pop-up talks, film screenings, panel discussions and performances.
